Solar Thermal Heating Systems
There are basically two types of solar heating systems: passive and active.
Passive solar heating is designed "into" the home or business and uses no "solar equipment." Most often, windows on the south side of the home allow the sun to heat the interior without pumps, fans, controls or collectors. Specialized architects and home designers calculate year-round heat gain and loss of the structure, as well as the capability of the heated area to store and disperse the heat. Improperly located or sized windows can quickly overheat a home, which then must be "cooled."
Active solar heating systems utilize collectors, circulators/fans and controllers to absorb, transport and control the solar heat.
